Why quotes vary so much
Two quotes for “gate automation” can differ several times over, because they describe different things: a light-duty motor with two remotes, or a heavy-duty operator with photocells, a safety edge, battery backup, an intercom link and an annual service. Understanding what drives the price helps you compare like with like.
The main cost factors
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Gate type | Sliding gates need one rack-drive motor; double swing gates need two operators; underground motors add pit work |
| Gate weight and length | Heavier and longer gates need higher-rated motors — rated above the actual gate weight |
| Duty cycle | Homes open the gate a few times a day; apartments and factories need high-duty or continuous-use motors |
| Motor brand and origin | European brands, Indian-assembled ranges and local makes differ in price, life and service support |
| Safety devices | Photocells, safety edges and flashing lights are essential, not optional extras |
| Access and control | Remotes, keypad, RFID, app control, video door phone or intercom link |
| Battery backup | 24 V DC motors with batteries keep working through power cuts |
| Civil and gate work | Foundation for the motor, track repair, rack fitting, cable trenching |
| Installation and AMC | Setup, force and limit adjustment, and regular servicing |
Gate condition can change the price
A motor can only move a gate that moves freely by hand. Bent tracks, worn rollers, sagging hinges, a sloping driveway or a weak post must be fixed first. Some quotes include this work; many do not. A site survey that checks the gate before quoting avoids surprises.
Can your gate be automated? →Where not to save
- Safety devices: a photocell pair and a safety edge cost little compared with the risk of a gate closing on a child or a car.
- Motor rating: an undersized motor overheats and fails early, especially on heavy mild-steel gates common in Bangalore.
- Battery backup: power cuts are when you most need the gate to work.
- Proper installation: correct force and limit settings decide safety and motor life.
Running costs
Electricity use is small. The real running costs are batteries (every few years), remote batteries, and servicing — lubrication, checks of safety devices and force settings. An AMC makes these predictable and keeps the warranty valid with many brands.

Getting an accurate quote
Share the gate type, approximate size and weight, photos of the gate and posts, how often it opens, and how you want to open it. We confirm everything on a free site survey and give an itemised proposal listing the motor, safety devices, accessories, civil work and AMC separately.

Is a sliding gate cheaper to automate than a swing gate?+
Usually, because a sliding gate needs one motor while a double swing gate needs two. Underground swing motors cost the most because of pit work.
Do I need photocells?+
Yes. Photocells and a safety edge are basic safety requirements for any automatic gate within reach of people.
Does the price include civil work?+
It depends on the quote. Ours lists civil and gate repair work separately so you can compare.
Is AMC necessary?+
It keeps safety devices tested and the motor serviced, which extends its life and avoids breakdowns at awkward times.
Why is one gate automation quote much cheaper?+
Usually a smaller motor, fewer safety devices, no battery backup, or gate work excluded. Compare line by line.
Can I add accessories later?+
Yes. Extra remotes, keypads, RFID and intercom links can usually be added to the controller later.
