Gate Automation

Can My Existing Gate Be Automated? What to Check First

How to tell whether your current sliding or swing gate can take a motor — free movement, weight, hinges, rollers, track, posts, slope, space and power — and the usual repairs before automation.

Usually yes — if the gate moves freely

Most existing sliding and swing gates can be automated without being replaced. The golden rule is simple: a motor should only move a gate that one person can already move smoothly by hand. If the gate drags, sticks or needs a shove, fix that first; a motor will not fix it and will fail early trying.

Checklist for sliding gates

  • The gate rolls smoothly by hand along its whole travel.
  • The bottom track is straight, level and firmly fixed; no dips or broken sections.
  • Rollers are in good condition and the right size for the track.
  • Top guide rollers hold the gate upright without binding.
  • There is space beside the gate at the opening end for the motor base.
  • The gate frame is strong enough to fix the rack along it.

Checklist for swing gates

  • Each leaf swings freely and stays where you leave it — it should not swing open or closed by itself.
  • Hinges are sound and the leaf does not sag or drag on the ground.
  • Pillars are solid enough to carry the motor and the gate’s force — brick pillars may need reinforcement.
  • The driveway inside is level where the gate swings; an upward slope means the leaf will hit the ground.
  • There is room for the arm or linear motor between the pillar and the gate.

Weight and size

Estimate or weigh the gate. Heavy MS gates in Bangalore often weigh several hundred kilograms per leaf. Motors are rated by weight and length or width, and the motor should be rated comfortably above the actual gate. Tall solid gates also face wind load.

How to estimate gate weight

Weighing a gate is rarely practical, so installers estimate. Measure the frame and infill sections and their sizes, note solid sheet panels, and calculate the steel weight; or compare it with similar gates. Solid MS sheet gates are much heavier than open grille designs of the same size. When in doubt, choose a motor with a comfortable margin above the estimate.

Common repairs before automation

  • Replacing worn rollers and re-levelling the track.
  • Adding or adjusting top guide rollers.
  • Replacing hinges with heavier ones; adding a bearing hinge.
  • Reinforcing a weak pillar or adding a steel post.
  • Trimming or re-hanging a sagging swing leaf.
  • Laying a power cable and a conduit for control wiring.

When replacement is better

  • The frame is badly rusted or cracked.
  • The gate has sagged so far that rehanging is not possible.
  • The opening type no longer suits the site, such as a swing gate on a steep slope.
  • The gate is far heavier than needed and a lighter design would save on the motor.

Power and wiring

The motor needs a power supply at the gate with its own breaker, ideally on the inverter circuit, plus conduits for photocells and any door phone. A free site survey checks all of this and gives you a clear list of any gate work needed before the motor goes on.

Quick answers

Do I need a new gate to automate it?+

Usually not. Most gates can be automated after minor repairs such as new rollers, hinges or track levelling.

My swing gate opens onto a slope. Can it be automated?+

If the leaf hits the slope, the gate may need to be raised, trimmed or converted to sliding. We assess this on the survey.

My pillars are brick. Is that a problem?+

Brick pillars may need reinforcement or a steel post to carry a motor safely.

Can a wooden gate be automated?+

Yes, if it is sound and within the motor’s weight and width limits, with suitable fixing points.

Do you repair the gate as well as fit the motor?+

Yes. We arrange fabrication repairs such as rollers, hinges and track work, and list them separately in the quote.

Can a very old gate be automated?+

Yes, if it is structurally sound and moves freely after repairs.
