When the gate is far from the power
Some gates have no convenient power supply: a farmhouse entrance hundreds of metres from the house, a plot or orchard gate, a secondary gate on a factory boundary, or a site where running a cable means digging across a driveway. Solar gate motors solve this by running on a battery charged by a solar panel. They also keep working through power cuts, which makes them attractive even where mains power exists.
How a solar gate system works
- A low-voltage DC gate motor, typically 24 V, drives the gate.
- A battery stores energy and powers the motor and controller.
- A solar panel charges the battery through a charge controller.
- Accessories — photocells, receivers, lights — also draw from the battery, so they must be low-power models.
Sizing for real use
Ask the installer to calculate daily energy use and battery autonomy, not just pick a standard kit.
| Factor | Effect on sizing |
|---|---|
| Gate weight and type | Heavier gates draw more energy per cycle |
| Cycles per day | A farm gate opened four times a day needs far less than a busy entrance |
| Standby draw | Controllers, receivers and photocells use power 24 hours a day |
| Monsoon and cloudy days | Battery must carry several low-sun days |
| Panel position | Clear sun, angled south, away from tree shade |
Where solar gate motors fit
- Farmhouses, plantations and farm plots.
- Secondary gates on large campuses.
- Villas in layouts with frequent power cuts.
- Temporary gates on construction sites.
- Light and medium gates; very heavy gates may need mains power.
Limits
- Heavy industrial gates and very frequent cycles are hard to support on solar alone.
- Shade from trees and buildings reduces charging badly.
- Batteries age and need replacement every few years.
- Panels can be stolen in remote locations; mount them securely.
Hybrid: mains plus solar
Where mains power is available but unreliable, a DC motor with mains charging and a small solar panel or battery backup gives the best of both. The gate works normally on mains, keeps working through power cuts, and the solar panel tops up the battery.
Battery backup for gate motors →Safety is the same
A solar gate is still a powered gate. It needs photocells, correct force settings, and safety edges where people and vehicles pass. Low-power safety accessories are available for solar systems.
Gate safety sensors and photocells →Maintenance
- Clean the solar panel of dust and bird droppings, especially in dry months.
- Check battery health yearly and replace when capacity drops.
- Check connections for corrosion after the monsoon.
- Keep the manual release accessible and known to the caretaker.
An example
A farmhouse near Devanahalli had a 4-metre swing gate 300 metres from the house, with no power at the gate. A 24 V swing operator with a solar panel on the gate pillar, a battery sized for four cloudy days and low-power photocells now opens on a remote from the car. Over two monsoons, the gate has never run out of power with its typical six cycles a day.

Gate automation services →Quick answers
Do solar gate motors work in the monsoon?+
Yes, if the battery is sized to carry several cloudy days and the panel gets clear sun.
Can a heavy gate run on solar?+
Light and medium gates are best; very heavy gates or frequent cycles may need mains power.
How long does a solar gate battery last?+
Typically a few years, depending on type, temperature and use.
Can I add solar to my existing gate motor?+
If it is a DC motor with battery support, often yes; AC motors usually need replacing.
Where should the solar panel go?+
On the gate pillar, wall or a pole in full sun, angled south, out of tree shade and secured against theft.
Will a solar gate work at night?+
Yes. The battery powers the gate at night; the panel recharges it during the day.
Do solar gates need safety sensors?+
Yes, the same as any powered gate.
