Two complaints we often hear
After installing an automatic gate, owners usually ask one of two things: “Can it open faster?” or “Why is it so noisy at night?” Both have practical answers. Gate speed is a trade-off between convenience and safety, and noise comes from the motor type and the gate’s mechanical condition as much as from the motor brand.
Typical speeds
Figures vary by model and gate; the motor’s data sheet gives its rated speed.
| Gate type | Typical opening time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Residential sliding (4–5 m) | Roughly 20–30 seconds | Commonly around 10–12 metres per minute |
| Swing gates (to 90 degrees) | Roughly 15–25 seconds | Depends on leaf length and operator |
| Fast sliding operators | Noticeably quicker | Need strong safety measures and robust gates |
| Boom barriers | A few seconds | Lighter arm; designed for speed |
Why faster is not always better
- A heavier, faster gate carries more force if it hits a person or vehicle.
- European standard EN 12453, widely referenced by manufacturers, limits impact forces for powered gates.
- Fast stops and starts shake the gate structure, hinges and rack.
- Speed matters most where vehicles queue on a busy road; for most homes a few seconds make little difference.
Soft start and soft stop
Good controllers ramp the gate up to speed and slow it before it reaches the end. This reduces noise and shock, protects the gate and motor, and makes the movement look smooth. Many DC motors offer adjustable speed and slow-down zones; ask for them to be set properly during installation.
Where noise comes from
| Source | Fix |
|---|---|
| Motor and gearbox | Choose a quieter DC or hydraulic operator |
| Steel gear rack | Nylon or nylon-reinforced rack for light and medium gates |
| Worn or dry rollers and wheels | Replace or lubricate; keep tracks clean |
| Gate rattling in guides | Adjust guide rollers and stops |
| Swing gate hinges | Lubricate; align leaves |
| Hard end stops | Soft stop settings and rubber stops |
Choosing a quiet motor
- DC motors (often 24 V) run smoothly, offer soft start and stop, and pair well with battery backup.
- Hydraulic swing operators are typically very quiet and smooth.
- AC motors are robust for heavy gates but can be louder.
- Ask to hear a working installation of the model, especially for villas where bedrooms face the gate.
Apartments and neighbours
In apartments, the gate may open hundreds of times a day and night. A quiet operator, nylon rack, well-maintained rollers and soft stops keep neighbours and ground-floor residents happy. Night-time noise is a common association complaint that is easily prevented at the design stage.
An example
A villa in Sahakara Nagar had a sliding gate that clanked loudly at 6 am when the milkman came. The fix was not a new motor: the installer replaced two worn rollers, swapped the steel rack for a nylon one, cleaned the track and set soft stop. The gate now moves almost silently and closes gently at the end.

Gate automation services →Quick answers
How fast should an automatic gate open?+
Most residential sliding gates open in roughly 20 to 30 seconds, which balances convenience and safety.
Can my gate open faster?+
Speed can sometimes be adjusted, but faster gates need stronger safety measures and robust structures.
Why is my gate motor noisy?+
Often worn rollers, a steel rack, dry hinges or hard stops rather than the motor itself.
Which gate motors are quietest?+
DC motors with soft start and stop, and hydraulic swing operators, are usually quiet.
Does a slower gate wear out less?+
Generally yes. Moderate speed with soft start and stop reduces shock on the gate, rack, hinges and motor.
Is a nylon rack strong enough?+
For light and medium residential gates, yes; heavy gates need steel racks, which can still be kept quieter with good alignment.
What is soft stop?+
The controller slows the gate before it reaches the end, reducing noise and shock.
