The plug-and-play camera boom
Wi-Fi cameras that plug into a socket and connect to an app have become the most common first security camera in Indian homes. They are sold online and in electronics stores, often with pan-tilt heads, night vision, two-way audio and memory card recording. Many brands compete, and the differences that matter are less about megapixels and more about app quality, security and support.
Brands you will see
Wi-Fi cameras are network cameras, so India’s security certification rules apply to them model by model.
| Brand | Background | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CP Plus EzyKam | Consumer range of India’s largest CCTV brand | Wide choice, Indian support network |
| TP-Link Tapo | Consumer smart home range from TP-Link | Popular indoor and outdoor models; VIGI is TP-Link’s business camera line |
| Ezviz | Consumer brand associated with Hikvision | Check certification of the exact model |
| Imou | Consumer brand associated with Dahua | Check certification of the exact model |
| Qubo | Hero Electronix, an Indian company | Indian brand with home cameras and doorbells |
What to compare
- Indoor pan-tilt vs fixed outdoor models, and the outdoor model’s IP rating.
- Resolution: 3MP to 4MP is typical; higher resolution needs more Wi-Fi bandwidth.
- Night vision: infrared, or colour with a spotlight.
- Human detection to reduce false alerts.
- Storage: memory card size supported, cloud plan cost, and NVR or ONVIF support.
- App quality, two-factor login and how long the brand has supported older models.
Storage options
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Memory card | No monthly fee | Stolen with the camera; limited days |
| Cloud plan | Footage safe if camera is stolen | Monthly fee; depends on internet |
| NVR via ONVIF (some models) | Central recording with other cameras | Not all models support it; features may be limited |
Wi-Fi reality check
Wi-Fi cameras are only as reliable as the Wi-Fi signal where they are mounted. Indoors near the router, they work well. At the gate, on the terrace or across concrete walls, signals drop and the camera disconnects. Mesh Wi-Fi or an outdoor access point can help, but for perimeter cameras a wired PoE camera is far more dependable.
Wi-Fi CCTV vs wired CCTV →Securing a Wi-Fi camera
- Update the app and camera firmware.
- Use a strong unique password and two-factor login.
- Share access through the app’s family sharing, not by sharing your password.
- Use privacy mode or schedules for indoor cameras.
- Put cameras on a guest or IoT network where possible.
Business use: VIGI and similar
For small offices and shops, business lines such as TP-Link VIGI and the business ranges of CCTV brands offer PoE cameras and NVRs with central management, which are more reliable than consumer Wi-Fi cameras.
An example
A family in a Whitefield flat used two indoor pan-tilt Wi-Fi cameras — one watching the main door from inside, one in the living room for their elderly mother — with human detection alerts and a privacy schedule when the family is home. For the main door outside, they added a video door phone instead of a third Wi-Fi camera, avoiding signal problems in the corridor.
Need more than one or two cameras?
For whole-home coverage, gates and perimeters, we install wired IP systems and can integrate suitable indoor Wi-Fi cameras where they make sense.
