Pet Cameras: Watching Your Dog or Cat While You’re Out

How to choose and set up cameras to check on pets at home: wide-angle views, two-way audio, night vision, treat dispensers, barking and motion alerts, pet-proof placement, privacy, and using the same cameras for home security.

Peace of mind for pet owners

Bangalore has a large and growing community of pet owners, many in flats with both partners working long hours. A pet camera lets you see whether the dog is anxious, the cat has knocked something over, or the pet sitter came on time. Some let you talk to your pet or toss a treat. With the right setup, the same cameras also protect your home while you are out.

Choosing the right camera

Dedicated pet cameras with treat dispensers are fun but often rely on subscriptions and cloud services. A good indoor Wi-Fi pan-tilt camera from an established brand covers most needs — wide view, two-way audio, night vision and alerts — and can record locally on a memory card. For homes that already have an IP CCTV system, an indoor camera added to the NVR gives continuous recording and the same app.

Pet-proof placement

  • Mount the camera high on a wall or shelf so pets cannot knock it over or chew the cable.
  • Hide or cover cables; puppies and rabbits chew everything.
  • Point it at where pets spend time — the bed, feeding area, sofa or balcony door.
  • Avoid pointing it at windows that cause glare in the day.
  • For treat dispensers on the floor, choose a heavy, stable model.

Alerts without the noise

If you also use cameras for security, a pet moving around will trigger basic motion alerts all day. Cameras with human detection let you get security alerts only for people, while separate pet or sound alerts tell you what the animals are up to. Schedule alerts for when you are away.

Privacy and security

  • Indoor cameras see your home life too — use privacy mode or a schedule when you are home.
  • Choose brands with regular firmware updates and certification for sale in India.
  • Use a strong unique password and two-factor login on the app.
  • Avoid cheap unbranded cameras that may leak video.

Checking on pet sitters and walkers

If a pet sitter, walker or groomer visits while you are out, an entrance camera confirms when they arrived and left, and an indoor camera shows how your pet was treated. Tell them the cameras are there; good professionals expect it.

An example

A couple in a Koramangala flat with a two-year-old Labrador added one indoor pan-tilt camera to their existing NVR, mounted above the bookshelf, with sound alerts for barking during working hours. They discovered the dog barked every afternoon when the building’s garbage collector came. A radio left on at that time and a chew toy solved it.

Quick answers

What is the best camera for watching pets?+

An indoor pan-tilt camera with wide view, two-way audio, night vision and sound alerts from an established brand.

Will my pet trigger security alerts?+

Basic motion detection will; cameras with human detection avoid it.

Do pet cameras need a subscription?+

Not always. Many record locally to a memory card or NVR.

Can I talk to my dog through the camera?+

Yes, if it has two-way audio.

Can a pet camera work as a security camera too?+

Yes, if it has human detection and you schedule security alerts for when you are away. An outdoor camera at the door is still recommended.

Where should I place a pet camera?+

High up, out of reach, pointed at where your pet spends most time.
