Gate automation in one paragraph

Gate automation means fitting an electric motor and controller to a gate so it opens and closes at the press of a button, a tap on a phone, or automatically when an authorised vehicle arrives. For homes it removes the daily chore of getting out of the car to open the gate — usually in the rain or in traffic. For apartments and factories it controls who comes in, keeps the gate closed when it would otherwise be left open, and works with guards, cameras and visitor systems.

Types of automatic gates

TypeHow it movesTypical use
Sliding gateSlides sideways along the wall on a track, driven by a motor and toothed rackWide or heavy gates; factories, apartments, many independent houses
Swing gate (arm motors)Leaves swing open like doors, pushed by motor arms fixed to the gate and pillarDouble-leaf gates at villas and bungalows
Underground swingMotors hidden in a box below each leaf hingeVillas where appearance matters
Telescopic slidingTwo or more sections slide over each otherWide openings with limited wall space
Boom barrierAn arm lifts to let one vehicle passTraffic control at apartments, factories, parking
Rolling shutter motorMotor rolls a shutter up and downGarages, shops, warehouses

The parts of a complete system

  • Motor and gearbox — sized for the gate’s weight and length, and for how many times a day it will run.
  • Control board — sets speed, force, auto-close time and safety behaviour.
  • Rack or arms — transfer the motor’s drive to the gate.
  • Limit switches — tell the motor where to stop when open and closed.
  • Safety photocells — infrared beams across the opening that stop or reverse the gate if something is in the way.
  • Flashing warning light — signals that the gate is moving.
  • Battery backup — keeps the gate working through power cuts.
  • Manual release — a key that frees the gate so it can be pushed by hand in an emergency.
  • Access devices — remotes, keypad, RFID reader, phone app or video door phone.

Ways to open an automatic gate

  • Remote controls — the simplest option, one per car or family member.
  • Video door phone — see the visitor, talk to them and open the gate from inside the house.
  • Phone app — open from anywhere, give temporary access to guests, and see when the gate was used.
  • RFID tags on windscreens — the gate or barrier opens automatically for registered vehicles.
  • Keypad or card reader — for pedestrians or staff.
  • Guard push-button — at apartment and factory security cabins.

Safety comes first

A moving gate weighing hundreds of kilograms can injure people, especially children, and damage cars. A properly installed system includes photocells across the opening, obstacle detection in the motor that reverses on resistance, correctly set force and speed, and a warning light. Safety standards used internationally for powered gates (such as the European EN 12453) are a useful benchmark when comparing installers. Never accept an installation without safety sensors.

Power cuts

With a battery backup, the gate keeps working for a number of cycles during a power cut, which matters in areas with frequent outages. Without a battery, the manual release lets you unlock the motor and move the gate by hand. Make sure everyone at home or the security staff know where the release key is and how to use it.

Before you automate an existing gate

  • The gate must move freely by hand — fix sagging hinges, damaged rollers or a bent track first.
  • Sliding gates need a straight, level track and a stopper at each end.
  • Swing gates need strong pillars and enough clear space for the leaves to open.
  • Check for slopes inside the gate, which can block swing leaves.
  • Plan a power point and cable route to the motor.
  • Decide how you will open it — remotes, app, video door phone or RFID — so the right controller is chosen.

Quick answers

Can any gate be automated?+

Most gates can, provided they are structurally sound and move freely. Very heavy, damaged or badly aligned gates may need repairs or modifications first.

How long does gate automation installation take?+

A typical home sliding or swing gate is usually completed in a day once the gate is ready. Underground motors and larger industrial gates take longer.

Is gate automation noisy?+

Modern motors are fairly quiet. Noise depends on the motor type and the condition of the gate’s rollers, track and hinges.

Can I open my gate from my phone?+

Yes, with a Wi-Fi or app-enabled controller, or through a compatible video door phone.
