Why smart locks are catching on

Smart locks have become common in Bangalore flats and villas because they solve everyday problems: no keys to lose or duplicate, a PIN for the maid or cook that works only at set hours, a log of who came in and when, and the ability to let a relative in from the office. They are not just gadgets — a good smart lock on a solid door is a real security upgrade over a basic cylinder lock.

Mortise or rim: fitting matters

Most Indian main doors use mortise locks fitted inside the door edge. Smart mortise locks replace the existing lock and need a door of suitable thickness, usually solid wood or a metal security door. Rim locks fit on the inside surface and suit doors that cannot be cut, including in rented flats. Glass doors and sliding doors need special models. Measure door thickness and the backset before buying, or ask the installer to.

Batteries and emergencies

  • Most smart locks run on AA batteries or a rechargeable pack, lasting months.
  • Low-battery warnings appear on the lock and in the app; replace batteries promptly.
  • If batteries die, most locks have a USB-C or 9V emergency power point outside, or a mechanical key.
  • Inside, the handle should always open the door without codes — essential for fire safety.

Security features to look for

  • Auto-lock when the door closes.
  • Alarms for tampering, forced entry or multiple wrong attempts.
  • Double-locking or privacy mode at night.
  • Encrypted communication and two-factor login in the app.
  • Audit log of entries by user.
  • A strong door and frame — the lock is only as strong as what it is fitted into.

Smart locks for domestic staff

One of the most useful features in Indian homes is time-limited PINs or fingerprints for the maid, cook or driver, which work only during their working hours, and an entry log showing when they arrived and left. Remove their access the day they stop working for you.

Pair it with a video door phone

A smart lock and a video door phone together let you see who is at the door from your phone and unlock it remotely. In villas, the same app can open the gate too. Some video door phone systems can release the lock directly from the indoor monitor.

An apartment example

A family in a Hebbal apartment fitted a mortise smart lock with fingerprint, PIN and card. Parents use fingerprints, the grandmother uses a card, the cook has a PIN valid from 7 to 10 am, and visiting relatives get a one-time code. The lock’s app log answered a long-running question about when the cook actually arrived, and the spare keys stayed locked in a drawer.

Buying and installation tips

  • Buy from established brands with service in Bangalore, such as Yale, Godrej, Dorset or Ozone.
  • Have it professionally installed so the door is cut and aligned correctly.
  • Keep the mechanical keys safe and do not leave them with staff.
  • Change default admin codes and set up the app account with a strong password.
