A sensitive balance
Many Bangalore homes depend on domestic staff: maids, cooks, drivers, nannies and caregivers for elderly parents. Employers worry about theft, the safety of children and elders, and whether work is being done. Staff, in turn, have a right to dignity and privacy. Cameras can protect both sides — evidence clears innocent staff as often as it catches wrongdoing — if they are used openly and fairly.
Where cameras are reasonable
| Area | Reasonable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main door, gate and entrance | Yes | Records arrivals, departures and visitors |
| Living room and common areas | Generally yes, with notice | Common for childcare and elder care |
| Kitchen | With care | Acceptable for safety with notice |
| Staff room or quarters | No | Their private space |
| Bathrooms | Never | Serious privacy violation |
| Bedrooms | Avoid | Except a baby monitor in a nursery with notice |
Tell staff — openly
Hidden cameras may feel tempting when you suspect something, but secret recording damages trust and can raise legal issues. Telling staff at the start of employment that cameras cover the entrance and common areas is fairer and usually more effective: most problems are prevented rather than caught. A short written note in the language they read, and a visible camera, are enough.
The legal picture
Privacy is a fundamental right in India following the Supreme Court’s 2017 Puttaswamy judgment. The DPDP Act exempts processing of personal data for purely personal or domestic purposes, which covers most home CCTV. That exemption does not make secret recording in private spaces acceptable, and other laws on voyeurism and harassment apply. Audio recording of private conversations is particularly sensitive. When in doubt, take legal advice.
The DPDP Act and CCTV →Verify before you hire
- Get identity documents and a known reference, preferably from a previous employer.
- Use police verification for domestic workers — Karnataka State Police offer tenant and servant verification services.
- Keep a copy of documents and a recent photograph.
- Agree working hours, duties and pay in writing.
Access and valuables
- Give staff a time-limited smart lock code instead of a house key.
- Keep jewellery, cash and documents in a locked cupboard or safe.
- Remove access the day employment ends.
- Use the entry log and entrance camera to confirm hours rather than arguing.
If you suspect something
- Check footage calmly before accusing anyone.
- Remember that misplaced items are far more common than theft.
- If there is clear evidence of theft or harm, export the footage and approach the police.
- Do not confront aggressively or withhold wages without due process.
An example
A Bellandur family with a toddler and a full-time nanny installed cameras at the main door and in the living and play area, and told the nanny on her first day. After a few months, when a gold chain went missing, the footage showed it had fallen behind a sofa during play. The chain was found, the nanny’s name cleared, and the family’s trust in her grew.
Set up thoughtfully
We install home cameras with privacy settings, schedules and access for family members only, and advise on placement that protects both your family and your staff’s dignity.
Home CCTV installation →Quick answers
Is it legal to have CCTV at home with a maid?+
Home CCTV for domestic purposes is common and generally acceptable in entrances and common areas, with notice. Never in bathrooms or staff quarters.
Should I tell my maid about the cameras?+
Yes. Open notice is fairer, builds trust and prevents most problems.
Can I use hidden nanny cams?+
Secret recording damages trust and can create legal risk, especially in private spaces. Visible cameras with notice are recommended.
How do I get police verification for a maid?+
Through the Karnataka State Police tenant and servant verification service or your local police station.
Can footage of my maid be used as evidence?+
Yes. Export the original clip with its date and time and give it to the police with your complaint; do not edit it.
