Why automate a shutter
Rolling shutters protect shops, showrooms, garages, godowns and loading docks across Bangalore. Lifting a heavy manual shutter twice a day is hard work, tempts staff to leave it half-open, and wears out springs and locks. A motor makes opening and closing quick and safe, and adds control: remotes or apps, locked when down, and integration with alarms and cameras.
Motor types
| Type | Where it fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tubular motor | Inside the shutter barrel; lighter shutters | Neat, hidden; suits homes, garages, smaller shops |
| Side-mounted motor | Beside the barrel, driving it by chain or direct coupling | Common for shop and godown shutters |
| Centre-mounted motor | In the middle of the barrel on wide shutters | For wide shopfronts |
| Industrial door operators | Large warehouse and dock shutters | Heavy-duty, frequent cycles |
Choosing the motor
- Size by shutter weight and width — gauge, slats and any glass or perforations.
- Consider how many times a day it opens: shops cycle twice; docks many times.
- Check the manual override: a chain or crank to open in a power cut.
- Add battery backup or connect to a UPS or inverter if power cuts are frequent.
- Choose a reliable brand with local spares and service.
Control options
- Wall push-button switch with a key or lock.
- Remote controls for owners and managers.
- App or Wi-Fi control, with access logs.
- Timer schedules, used with care so nobody is trapped or left out.
Safety
A descending shutter can injure someone or damage a vehicle. Safety edges on the bottom slat or photocells across the opening stop and reverse the shutter on an obstruction, especially important on garages and loading docks where vehicles and people move under it. Limit switches must be set correctly so the shutter stops at the floor and at the top.
Gate safety sensors and photocells →Security benefits
- Motors with self-locking gear make the shutter hard to lift by force when closed.
- A shutter contact on the alarm detects forced opening.
- A camera covering the shutter outside records any attempt.
- Access logs show who opened the shutter and when.
Power cuts and backup
A shop that cannot open its shutter in a morning power cut loses business; one that cannot close it at night is exposed. Choose a motor with manual override, and consider battery backup units or connecting to the shop’s inverter or UPS. Train staff on the manual override procedure.
Battery backup for gate motors →An example
A hardware shop on Old Madras Road had a heavy 14-foot shutter that took two staff to lift. A side-mounted motor with remotes, a battery backup unit and a safety edge now opens it in under a minute. A shutter contact on the burglar alarm and a camera outside the shop alert the owner if anyone tries to force it at night.

Gate and shutter automation →Quick answers
Can an existing rolling shutter be motorised?+
Usually yes, if it is in good condition and the barrel and brackets can take a motor.
What happens to a motorised shutter in a power cut?+
It can be opened with the manual override, or kept running with battery backup or an inverter.
Are motorised shutters more secure?+
Yes. Self-locking motors make them hard to lift, and alarms and cameras can be linked.
Do motorised shutters need safety sensors?+
Yes, especially on garages and docks, to stop and reverse on an obstruction.
How long does a shutter motor last?+
Many years with correct sizing and occasional servicing; overloaded motors and seized slats shorten life.
Which motor suits a garage shutter?+
A tubular or side-mounted motor sized for the shutter weight, with a safety edge and manual override.
Can I open my shop shutter from my phone?+
Yes, with an app-controlled motor or controller.
