The short answer
HD analog cameras with a DVR are the budget choice and work well for homes and small shops with up to around 8 cameras. IP cameras with an NVR give better images, more features and scale far better — they are the right choice for offices, apartments, factories and warehouses.
Side-by-side comparison
| HD analog (DVR) | IP (NVR) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cable | Coaxial cable + separate power | Network cable carrying power (PoE) and video |
| Typical resolution | 2MP–5MP | 2MP–8MP (4K) and above |
| Image detail | Good | Sharper, especially for faces and distant areas |
| Cost | Lower upfront | Higher upfront, lower cost per camera at scale |
| Cable distance | Long runs on coax | 100 m per run; fibre or switches for longer |
| Smart features | Basic motion detection | Line-crossing, intrusion alerts, better search |
| Expansion | Limited by DVR channels | Add cameras on the network as you grow |
| Best for | Homes, small shops | Offices, apartments, factories, warehouses |
When HD analog makes sense
If you have a home or a small shop, need 4–8 cameras and want to keep the cost low, HD analog is a sensible choice. It is also a good way to upgrade an old analog system, because existing coaxial cables can often be reused.
When to choose IP
Choose IP when you need sharper images, more than 8–16 cameras, cameras spread across several buildings, or smart alerts like intrusion and line-crossing. Apartments, offices and factories almost always end up on IP, with cameras on their own network so they never slow down office systems.
Brands
Hikvision, CP Plus, PRAMA and Honeywell all make both HD analog and IP ranges. The right model depends on the spot — wide angle for a compound, higher resolution for a gate, colour-night for poorly lit areas.
CCTV installation services →Quick answers
Is IP CCTV better than HD analog?+
IP gives sharper images, smart alerts and easier expansion. HD analog is cheaper and fine for homes and small shops with a few cameras.
Can I reuse my old CCTV cables?+
Existing coaxial cables can often be reused with HD analog cameras. Moving to IP usually needs new network cabling.
Does IP CCTV need internet?+
No. IP cameras record locally to the NVR. Internet is only needed to view cameras remotely on your phone.
