Why CCTV needs maintenance
CCTV systems fail quietly. A hard disk stops recording, a camera is knocked out of position, a lens gathers dust, a cable is chewed through in the basement — and nobody notices until the day footage is needed. An AMC is how you find these problems first.
The checklist
A good CCTV AMC should cover at least the following:
- Scheduled preventive visits, with the number per year written in the contract.
- Cleaning of lenses and housings, and checking camera angles and focus.
- A check that every camera is recording, and that retention matches what you were promised.
- Hard-disk health checks, with a warning before a disk fails.
- Checks on connectors, power supplies, PoE switches and the UPS or inverter connection.
- Remote-view and mobile app checks for the people who need access.
- Priority breakdown support between visits.
- A written report after every visit.
- A GST invoice for the contract.
Read the fine print
Check whether replacement parts are included or charged separately, how quickly breakdown calls are attended, and whether visits cover the whole system or only selected cameras. For apartments and factories, make sure reports are addressed to the association or the company so there is a record across management changes.
AMC for a system someone else installed
If your original installer is no longer around, you can still get an AMC. Expect the new provider to visit and inspect the system first — cameras, recorder, hard disks, cabling and power — list the faults, and quote for repairs and the AMC separately.
