Accessories decide how easy it is to use
The power unit and pipes decide how strong a central vacuum is. The hose and accessories decide whether you actually enjoy using it. A hose that is too short means switching inlets every few minutes; the wrong floor tool leaves dust on rugs; no kick-plate means sweeping into a dustpan in the kitchen. Choosing accessories is worth as much thought as choosing the unit.
Hose types
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard hose | Plugs into the inlet; the unit starts through contacts or a switch | Simple systems, lowest cost |
| Switch-in-handle hose | On/off switch on the handle | Most homes: stop and start without walking back |
| Electric hose | Carries power to an electric brush head | Homes with rugs and carpets |
| Retractable hose | Hose is stored inside the pipe and pulled out from the inlet | Homes that dislike storing a hose; needs planning at construction |
Choosing hose length
Common lengths are around 9 and 12 metres. Longer hoses mean fewer inlets, but they are heavier to carry and slightly reduce suction at the tool. For most Indian homes with compact rooms, 9 metres is comfortable; villas with large living areas or long corridors often use 12 metres. Before inlets are fixed, test the hose length from each position to the farthest corner of every room it must reach, including behind beds and doors.
Kick-plate (sweep) inlets
A kick-plate inlet sits at floor level in the skirting or under a kitchen cabinet. You switch it on with your toe and sweep dust, crumbs and hair straight into it — no dustpan needed. It is the most loved central vacuum accessory in Indian kitchens, where floors are swept daily, and also works well in dining areas, utility balconies and entrances. Kick-plates must be planned before the kitchen is installed, because the pipe runs inside or behind the cabinet plinth.
Floor tools and power brushes
- Hard floor brush: soft bristles for vitrified tiles, granite, marble and wooden floors common in Bangalore homes.
- Turbo brush: an air-driven rotating brush, good on small rugs, with no wiring needed.
- Electric power brush: a motorised brush for carpets and thick rugs; needs an electric hose and powered inlets.
- Combination floor tool: switches between bristles and carpet mode.
Tool kit essentials
- Crevice tool for sofa gaps, corners and car seats.
- Dusting brush for shelves, books and blinds.
- Upholstery tool for sofas, mattresses and curtains.
- Extension wand for ceiling fans, cobwebs and high shelves.
- Hose sock or cover to protect furniture and wall paint from scuffs.
- Wall hanger or storage bag near an inlet.
Car and garage cleaning
A garage or car porch inlet is one of the most practical extras for villas. With a short hose and a crevice tool you can clean car seats, mats and boots without carrying a portable vacuum outside. A separate garage hose avoids bringing car dirt into the house, and a dedicated inlet near the gate or porch also helps with leaves and dust. Do not vacuum water, wet mud or hot ash: central vacuums are for dry dirt unless the unit is specifically built for wet pickup.
What is worth buying
For most homes, a switch-in-handle hose, a good hard-floor brush, a basic tool kit and one kitchen kick-plate give the best value. Add an electric power brush only if you have rugs or carpets, a retractable hose only if you are still at construction stage, and a garage inlet for villas with a car porch.
Plan a central vacuum with us →Quick answers
What hose length do I need for a central vacuum?+
Around 9 metres suits most apartments and compact homes; 12 metres suits larger villas. Test it from each inlet before fixing inlet positions.
Can I add a kick-plate inlet later?+
It is difficult once a kitchen is installed, because the pipe runs behind the cabinet plinth. Plan it at construction or kitchen renovation.
Do I need an electric power brush?+
Only for carpets or thick rugs. On tiles, granite and wooden floors a hard-floor brush is enough.
Can I use a central vacuum to clean my car?+
Yes. A garage or porch inlet with a short hose and crevice tool makes car cleaning easy.
