What voice can control

  • Lights and lighting scenes in each room.
  • Fans, AC and geysers through smart switches or IR controllers.
  • Curtains and blinds.
  • TV and music.
  • Door locks (usually locking only, or unlocking with a spoken PIN, depending on the platform).
  • Video door phone and camera feeds on smart displays.

The three main ecosystems

Feature lists change frequently, so check the latest language and device support for the specific speaker you plan to buy.

Choosing between them

Choose the ecosystem the family already uses. An iPhone household will be happiest with Apple Home; an Android household with Google Home; Alexa suits anyone who wants inexpensive speakers in many rooms and the widest choice of compatible devices. Because many Matter devices work with all three, the choice is less permanent than it used to be.

Useful voice routines for Indian homes

  • “Good morning”: lights on in the kitchen, geyser on, bedroom curtains open, news on the speaker.
  • “I’m leaving”: all lights and fans off, AC off, curtains closed, door locked, cameras armed.
  • “Movie time”: living-room lights dimmed, curtains closed, TV on.
  • “Good night”: all lights off except a path light, AC set to sleep temperature, door locked.
  • “Pooja”: specific lights and music for prayer time.

Example: a family’s everyday routines

A family in an HSR Layout apartment uses voice for a handful of routines rather than everything. “Good morning” opens the bedroom curtains, switches on the geyser for 20 minutes and reads the weather. “I’m leaving” switches off lights and ACs and confirms the main door is locked. The grandparents use simple Kannada and Hindi commands to switch fans and lights in their room without finding the right switch. Wall switches and keypads still work for everything, so nobody depends on voice, and the door can be locked by voice but never unlocked.

Make voice an extra, not the only way

Voice is convenient but should never be the only control. Guests, staff and elderly parents need wall switches that work normally, and the system must keep working if the internet drops. Design the home so that every essential function has a physical control, with voice and the app as extras.

Making voice work well

  • Name rooms and devices simply and consistently — “hall light”, not “Philips bulb 2”.
  • Use groups so “turn off the hall” works for every light there.
  • Put a speaker in each main room, but avoid placing it next to the TV speaker.
  • Set up voice profiles so the assistant recognises family members.
  • Keep a printed list of key phrases for guests and elders.

Privacy tips

  • Use the microphone mute button in bedrooms when you prefer.
  • Review and delete voice recordings in the assistant’s privacy settings.
  • Require a PIN for voice unlocking, or disable it.
  • Keep speakers and hubs on the separate devices network, not with work laptops.

Quick answers

Can I use Alexa and Google Home together?+

Yes. Many Matter devices can be controlled from more than one ecosystem at the same time.

Can voice assistants control my existing AC?+

Yes, through a smart IR controller that mimics the AC remote, or through the AC’s own Wi-Fi app if it has one.

Does voice control work without internet?+

Mostly not, because voice is processed online. Wall switches and local scenes keep working.

Is it safe to unlock doors by voice?+

Only with a spoken PIN, and many families disable voice unlocking altogether. Locking by voice is safe and useful.

Can voice control turn on my geyser?+

Yes, through a heavy-duty smart switch rated for the geyser’s load, installed by an electrician.

Do I need a speaker in every room?+

No. Phones and one or two speakers can control the whole house, but a speaker in each main room is more convenient.

Do voice assistants understand Indian languages?+

Major assistants support Hindi and some other Indian languages for common commands; support varies by device and feature.
