Touchless Attendance: Face, Palm, Card and Mobile Options

Touch-free ways to record attendance — face recognition, contactless palm, RFID and QR, mobile check-in — compared for hygiene, speed, accuracy and cost.

Why touch-free became the default

Fingerprint machines were the standard for years, but touching a shared sensor hundreds of times a day is unhygienic, and dirty or worn fingers cause rejections. Since 2020, most new installations in offices, hospitals and food businesses have moved to touch-free methods, led by face recognition.

Face recognition in practice

Current face terminals from brands such as eSSL, Hikvision, PRAMA, Matrix, ZKTeco and Suprema recognise a face in about a second or less and include liveness detection against photos and videos. Many can also take cards, PIN or QR as a fallback, and combine with access control to open doors or turnstiles.

Liveness detection explained

A face terminal must tell a real person from a photo, a video on a phone or a printed mask. Liveness detection does this, using techniques such as infrared or depth sensing, detecting natural movement, or analysing skin texture. Terminals with an infrared or dual camera generally resist spoofing far better than single-camera models. Ask for liveness detection to be specified in the quotation, and test it with a photo during the demo.

Placement and lighting

  • Avoid mounting the terminal facing a window or open doorway — strong backlight is the commonest cause of slow recognition.
  • Keep even, moderate lighting on faces; avoid harsh spotlights directly above.
  • Mount at the height recommended by the manufacturer, typically around average eye level.
  • Allow a short, straight approach so people face the device naturally.
  • Outdoors, use a rated model under a canopy, away from direct sun.

Choosing the right touchless method

  • Office staff: face recognition.
  • Factories and labour: face recognition at the gate with turnstiles.
  • Hospitals, food and pharma: face or contactless palm.
  • Visitors and short-term staff: QR codes or temporary cards.
  • Field staff: mobile app with geo-fence and selfie.

Moving from fingerprint to face

  • Check whether your attendance software supports the new face terminal; many brands support both in the same software.
  • Enrol faces at the new terminal, under the real lighting.
  • Keep the old fingerprint machine running for one payroll cycle in parallel.
  • Compare reports and fix any rejections before switching off fingerprints.
  • Delete old fingerprint templates you no longer need.

Privacy

Face and palm templates are biometric personal data. Choose devices that store templates encrypted, limit who can access them, tell employees clearly, and delete templates when people leave.

Quick answers

Is face recognition attendance accurate?+

Current terminals are highly accurate when installed with good lighting and correct enrolment.

Does face attendance work with masks?+

Many current models support mask detection and recognition with masks, though accuracy is best without.

Can we use cards and face together?+

Yes. Card plus face verification is common in higher-security areas.

Can an old fingerprint machine be replaced without changing software?+

Often, if the new face terminal is from the same brand or supported by your software. We check compatibility first.

Can a photo fool a face attendance machine?+

Cheap single-camera models can sometimes be fooled. Terminals with proper liveness detection, usually using infrared or dual cameras, resist photos and videos.

Does face recognition work for twins?+

Identical twins can occasionally be confused. A card or PIN as a second factor solves it for those individuals.
