Line-Crossing and Intrusion Detection for Perimeters

How CCTV line-crossing and intrusion (region) detection protect fences, compound walls and yards: how to set them up, human and vehicle filtering, schedules, sirens and lights, alarm monitoring, and avoiding false alarms.

From recording to warning

Most CCTV only records what happened. Perimeter analytics turn cameras into an early-warning system: the camera raises an alarm the moment someone climbs a compound wall or enters a yard after hours, while there is still time to respond. Line-crossing and intrusion detection are the two basic tools, and with today’s AI cameras they are reliable enough for homes, villas, factories and warehouses.

The two rules

RuleHow it worksBest for
Line crossingYou draw a virtual line; the alarm triggers when a person or vehicle crosses it, optionally only in one directionCompound walls, fence lines, gates, roof edges
Intrusion (region)You draw an area; the alarm triggers when a target stays inside for a set timeYards, stock areas, parking, terraces
Region entrance / exitTriggers when a target enters or leaves an areaRestricted rooms and loading bays

Human and vehicle filtering

Older motion detection fired at anything that changed in the picture: leaves, rain, shadows, headlights, stray dogs and cats. Cameras with deep-learning analytics classify targets as humans or vehicles and ignore the rest. This single feature is what makes perimeter alarms usable in Bangalore, where trees, monsoon rain and street dogs would otherwise flood your phone with false alerts.

Setting it up well

  • Mount the camera to look along the wall, not straight at it, so intruders cross the line across the frame.
  • Draw the line a little inside the wall so passers-by on the road do not trigger it.
  • Set a minimum target size to ignore distant movement and animals.
  • Use a schedule: arm the rule at night and when the premises are closed, not when staff and visitors are moving.
  • Light the area or use colour night vision cameras so footage is useful when an alarm fires.
  • Walk-test every rule after setup and after any change in camera angle.

What happens when it triggers

  • Push notification with a snapshot to the owner or security phone.
  • Strobe light, siren or recorded voice warning on active deterrence cameras.
  • Alarm output to a burglar alarm panel or a hooter at the security cabin.
  • Pop-up on the security monitor and higher-quality recording.
  • Alert to a remote monitoring service that can speak through the camera speaker.

Limits to plan around

  • Heavy rain, fog and dense foliage reduce accuracy.
  • Analytics work best within the range the maker specifies; long fences need more cameras or thermal cameras.
  • Shaking poles and swinging cameras cause false alarms.
  • People must actually respond — alerts that nobody checks protect nothing.

Combining with a burglar alarm

Camera analytics watch the outside; a burglar alarm watches doors, windows and rooms inside. Linking the two gives layered protection: a line-crossing alert on the wall gives early warning, and a door contact or motion sensor confirms someone has actually got in. Many NVRs and alarm panels can share inputs and outputs so one arms with the other.

Typical designs

For a villa, two or three cameras along the compound wall with line crossing armed from 11 pm to 6 am usually cover the perimeter. For a factory, cameras every 30 to 50 metres along the fence, overlapping at corners, feed alarms to the security cabin with a hooter and to the manager’s phone. We design and walk-test the rules at handover.

Quick answers

What is line-crossing detection in CCTV?+

A rule that raises an alarm when a person or vehicle crosses a virtual line drawn on the camera image.

Will birds and dogs trigger it?+

Not often with AI cameras that filter for humans and vehicles, but set a minimum target size too.

Do I need a special camera?+

Most current IP cameras support line crossing; AI cameras with human and vehicle filtering give far fewer false alarms.

Can it switch on a siren?+

Yes, on active deterrence cameras or through the NVR’s alarm outputs.
