What “grey market” means
A grey-market product is genuine but imported or sold outside the brand’s official Indian channel — for example, a camera meant for another country, brought in by an unauthorised trader. A counterfeit is a fake made to look like a brand. Both are common in CCTV because prices vary across countries and buyers compare online prices. Both carry real risks: no warranty, wrong firmware, missing certification and sometimes poor quality.
Risks of grey-market and fake products
| Risk | What it means |
|---|---|
| No Indian warranty | The brand’s Indian service centre may refuse repairs |
| No certification | The model may not be registered for sale in India |
| Wrong firmware region | Foreign-language menus, missing features, blocked updates |
| Refurbished sold as new | Shorter life, especially for hard disks |
| Counterfeit hardware | Poor images, early failure, security risks |
| Insurance and tenders | Non-compliant products can create problems later |
Check the label and box
- BIS registration mark with an R-number on products under compulsory registration.
- Importer or manufacturer name and address in India, and MRP, as packaged goods rules require.
- Serial number on the device matching the box and invoice.
- Model number matching the Indian product listing on the brand’s website.
Check online
- Verify the serial number on the brand’s warranty portal where available.
- Search the model on the BIS registration database.
- For hard disks, check the serial on Seagate or WD warranty pages — region and warranty status show up.
- Confirm the seller is an authorised distributor or partner of the brand.
Warning signs
- Prices far below every authorised dealer.
- No GST invoice, or an invoice without serial numbers.
- Missing Indian importer or MRP sticker.
- Menus in another language, or firmware that refuses updates.
- Hard disks with long power-on hours already recorded.
- Seller unwilling to provide warranty in writing.
Hard disks deserve special care
Hard disks are the most frequently faked or recycled part of a CCTV system. Used disks are sometimes relabelled and sold as new. Check the serial number on the maker’s site, look at the power-on hours with a disk tool or in the NVR, and buy surveillance-grade disks only from authorised sellers.
Certification ties in
Network cameras must be certified under India’s security requirements and registered model by model. A grey-market import of a model sold abroad is often a different model number from the Indian version, and may not be registered at all. Checking certification of the exact model on your invoice protects both legality and security.
STQC certification for CCTV →Buying through an installer
A reputable installer buys from authorised distributors and passes on genuine products with warranty. Ask your installer to list serial numbers on the invoice and to confirm the source. If a quote is suspiciously cheap, the difference often lies here.
Questions to ask before hiring a CCTV installer →An example
A Bangalore restaurant bought an 8-camera kit online at a price well below dealers. When two cameras failed in the first year, the brand’s service centre found the serial numbers belonged to stock meant for another market and declined warranty. The NVR menu also lacked the Indian firmware’s updates. Replacing the kit through an authorised channel cost more than the original saving.
Genuine, certified, documented
SightShield buys through authorised channels, lists serial numbers on every GST invoice, and quotes only IP models whose certification we can confirm.
