Gate Automation

Linking Your Automatic Gate to a Video Door Phone or Intercom

How to see, talk to and let in visitors at the gate from inside the house or from your phone — video door phones, app intercoms, apartment intercoms, wiring and gate-opening relays.

See who it is, then open

An automatic gate is most useful when you can open it for a visitor without going outside. Linking it to a video door phone lets you see the person at the gate, talk to them, and open the gate with one button on the indoor monitor — or from your phone if you are away.

How it works

  • An outdoor camera-and-call panel is mounted at the gate pillar.
  • Indoor monitors in the house show the video and carry the two-way audio.
  • The panel or monitor has a relay output wired to the gate controller’s open input.
  • Pressing “open” on the monitor triggers the relay and the gate opens; the gate closes automatically after a set time.
  • With an IP or Wi-Fi door phone, calls also ring on your phone, and you can open the gate from the app.

Wiring tips

Lay a conduit from the gate pillar to the house during construction, with cable for the door phone and the gate control signal. Keep low-voltage cables away from the gate motor’s power cable. For long distances, IP door phones on Cat6 are more reliable than Wi-Fi.

Security settings

  • Use a separate network or VLAN for IP door phones, and change default passwords.
  • Limit which app users can open the gate remotely.
  • Keep an event log of remote openings where the system supports it.
  • Set the gate to close automatically after a short delay.
  • Avoid mounting the outdoor unit where it can be reached from outside to tamper with the wiring.

Using it day to day

  • Visitor rings: indoor monitors and phones ring together.
  • You see and talk to the visitor; press “open gate” or “open door”.
  • Deliveries: open the pedestrian gate only, not the main gate.
  • Away from home: answer on the phone and open for trusted visitors only.
  • Missed calls: review snapshots or clips to see who came.

Pedestrian gate and lock

If the main gate has a small pedestrian door, an electric lock on it can be opened from the same monitor, so visitors on foot are let in without opening the full gate.

Add CCTV at the gate

A CCTV camera covering the gate records every arrival and departure, including vehicles and number plates, and complements the door phone, which only records when someone presses the bell.

Example: a villa with parents at home

In a villa in RT Nagar where elderly parents live and their son works in Whitefield, the gate has a video door station with a call button, linked to an indoor monitor in the living room and to the son’s phone app. When a courier rings, either the parents or the son can see and speak to the visitor and open the pedestrian gate lock; the driveway gate opens only for the family’s remotes. A camera beside the door station records every visit. The parents no longer walk out to the gate to check who is there, especially at night.

Quick answers

Can I open my gate from my phone when a visitor rings?+

Yes, with an IP or Wi-Fi video door phone linked to the gate controller.

Can an existing door phone be linked to a new gate motor?+

Often yes, if the door phone has a relay output. We check the model on the survey.

Will the gate close automatically after opening for a visitor?+

Yes. Gate controllers can close automatically after a set time once the photocells are clear.

Does it work in apartments?+

Yes, through an apartment video intercom with a guard station and flats, or a visitor management app.

Can I have monitors on every floor?+

Yes. Most systems support several indoor monitors, and IP systems support many.

What if the Wi-Fi is down?+

Wired indoor monitors keep working; only phone answering needs the network.

Does a video door phone record visitors?+

Many models store snapshots or clips; a separate camera at the gate gives continuous recording on the NVR.
