Edge AI vs Cloud AI in Security Cameras: What’s the Difference?

Where the artificial intelligence in a CCTV system runs — inside the camera, in the NVR or server, or in the cloud — and how that affects speed, cost, bandwidth, privacy and what features you can use.

Same features, different places

Human detection, face recognition, number-plate reading, people counting and smart search are all forms of AI video analytics. What differs between products is where the analysis happens: on a chip inside the camera (edge AI), in the NVR or an on-site server, or on servers in the cloud. Where it runs decides how fast alerts arrive, how much internet you need, what happens when the connection drops, and who has access to your video.

Three architectures

Where AI runsExamplesStrengthsWeaknesses

In the NVR or serverAI NVRs, VMS servers with analyticsAdds AI to ordinary cameras; central rules and searchNVR channels with AI are limited; server cost
In the cloudCloud VMS, retail analytics platformsPowerful models, easy updates, multi-site dashboardsNeeds upload bandwidth, subscription, privacy questions

Why edge AI dominates in India

Most sites in India have limited and sometimes unreliable upload bandwidth, and owners dislike monthly fees. Edge AI cameras solve both: the camera decides whether a moving object is a person or vehicle and sends only the alarm and metadata. Alerts still work during an internet outage because recording and analytics stay on site. That is why most AI features sold in 2026 run in the camera or the NVR.

Where cloud AI makes sense

  • Retail chains comparing footfall, dwell time and queue length across many stores.
  • Businesses that want natural-language search across months of video without local servers.
  • Remote monitoring services that verify alarms from many customers.
  • Sites with no IT staff where the provider handles updates.

Privacy and data protection

Face templates, number plates and video are personal data under the DPDP Act. Edge processing keeps more data on your premises, while cloud processing means a third party processes it on your behalf. Either way, define the purpose, limit retention, restrict access and inform people through signage and policy. For face recognition especially, ask where templates are stored and how they are deleted.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Which analytics run in the camera and which need an AI NVR or server?
  • How many channels of AI does the NVR support at once?
  • Does it work if the internet goes down?
  • Is there a subscription, and what happens to features if you stop paying?
  • Where is data processed and stored, and is the model certified for sale in India?

A practical example

A Bangalore retailer with six stores wants three things: alerts when anyone enters a store after closing, footfall counts per hour, and the ability to find a customer dispute clip quickly. Edge AI cameras at each entrance handle the after-hours intrusion alert and count people in and out, even if the store’s internet drops. The NVR in each store keeps 30 days of recording with smart search. Only the hourly counts and alarm events go to a cloud dashboard that head office checks — a few kilobytes, not video streams.

Our view

For most homes, shops, offices and factories, edge AI cameras with a matching NVR give the best value: reliable alerts, no fees and data that stays on site. Cloud analytics are worth it for multi-store retail and specialist monitoring. We help you match the features to the real problem you want to solve.

Quick answers

What is edge AI in CCTV?+

Video analytics that run on a chip inside the camera, so it detects people, vehicles and events itself without a server or cloud.

Does cloud AI need fast internet?+

Yes. Video or clips must be uploaded for analysis, which needs steady upload bandwidth.

Can old cameras get AI features?+

Often, by connecting them to an AI NVR or VMS server that runs the analytics.

Is edge AI more private?+

Generally yes, because video and analysis stay on your premises.
