Why construction attendance is hard
Construction sites have large, changing workforces supplied by many contractors, often with no fixed entrance, limited power and no internet. Paper muster rolls and supervisor counts are easy to inflate. Builders paying contractors for manpower need daily, verifiable numbers.
Security for a House Under Construction →What goes wrong with paper muster rolls
- Supervisors mark absent workers present, and the contractor bills for them.
- Overtime is written in after the fact, with no way to verify it.
- Workers move between sites and contractors without a record.
- Registers are lost, damaged by rain, or rewritten before audits.
- Head office sees numbers days later, after the money is committed.
The practical setup
- A rugged, weather-protected face terminal at the site entrance, under a canopy.
- A 4G router for connectivity to a cloud platform.
- Battery backup or a solar-charged supply where mains power is unreliable.
- A simple gate or turnstile so every worker passes the reader.
- CCTV at the site gate covering the reader for spot checks.
Choosing a device for site conditions
| Requirement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Dust and rain | An outdoor-rated face terminal, or an indoor model inside a weatherproof enclosure under a canopy |
| Bright sunlight | A device rated for strong ambient light, mounted facing away from the sun |
| Large crews at shift start | Fast recognition and enough capacity for the peak headcount; two devices on large sites |
| Unreliable power | Built-in battery or a small UPS with solar charging |
| No broadband | A 4G router, and a device that stores punches offline |
| Theft risk | Lockable mounting box and a camera covering the device |
Why face, not fingerprint
Cement, plaster and manual work wear and dirty fingerprints, causing frequent rejections. Face recognition is touch-free, fast at shift start, and hard to proxy, making it the better choice on construction sites.
Reports for builders
- Daily headcount by contractor and trade.
- Worker-wise attendance for wage verification.
- Overtime by contractor.
- Attendance by site for builders running several projects.
A typical day on a site with face attendance
- Workers queue at the site gate at shift start; each looks at the terminal for about a second.
- The supervisor’s phone shows the live headcount by contractor within minutes.
- New workers are enrolled at the security cabin with their ID and contractor details before they start.
- At the end of the day, out-punches close each worker’s hours; overtime is calculated by rule.
- Head office sees all sites in one dashboard and approves contractor bills against the reports.
Moving between projects
With a cloud platform, the same devices can be moved to the next project and reassigned in the software. Workers who move with their contractor keep their enrolment and history.
Records and compliance
India’s labour codes, in force since November 2025, require employers to maintain registers of persons employed, muster rolls and wages, and allow these to be kept electronically. They also brought construction worker welfare and contract labour rules under the new codes. A biometric system that exports worker-wise attendance by contractor makes these records far easier to keep and to produce in an inspection. Check with your compliance advisor which registers and formats apply to your project.
Attendance records and the law →Combine with site security
Construction sites also suffer material theft. Cameras at the gate, store and material yard, with night alerts, complement attendance control.
CCTV for construction sites →Mistakes to avoid
- Mounting the device where workers can walk around it — use a simple barrier or turnstile.
- Enrolling workers without linking them to the correct contractor.
- Leaving former workers enrolled after they leave the site.
- Relying on site Wi-Fi from the site office instead of a dedicated 4G router.
- Forgetting to protect the device from cement dust during concreting.
Quick answers
Can attendance machines work without electricity on site?+
Yes, with battery backup or a solar-charged supply.
How do we connect a site with no internet?+
A 4G router sends punches to the cloud; the device also stores punches offline.
Can contractors be billed from the system?+
Contractor-wise reports give the headcount and hours needed to verify bills.
Can devices be reused on the next project?+
Yes. Devices are moved and reassigned in the cloud software.
How many workers can one face terminal handle at shift start?+
Recognition takes about a second per person, so one device can clear a few hundred workers in a reasonable time if the queue is organised. Very large sites use two or more devices.
Can migrant workers without smartphones use the system?+
Yes. Face terminals need nothing from the worker except their face; enrolment is done at the site office.
